Maui PrestigeFlooring

Flooring Contractor in Kahului and Wailuku

Maui Prestige Flooring is a flooring specialist based in Wailuku, a short drive from every street in Kahului. We install, refinish and repair floors for Central Maui homeowners, landlords, shops and offices, and we have been doing it for more than 16 years and 1,700 jobs.

Central Maui is our home turf, so we know its quirks firsthand. A plantation-era house off Market Street needs different work than a Maui Lani home on a slab, and the red dust that blows across the isthmus wears out floors faster than most people expect.

Being close means short drives, easy return visits and material picked up from Kahului suppliers the same day it lands. Every job comes with a written quote, licensed and insured crews and a 1-year labor warranty.

Central Maui's Flooring Team, Based on Kaahumanu Avenue

Our office sits at 1710 West Kaahumanu Avenue, on the road that joins Wailuku to Kahului. That puts the Wailuku civic center, Kahului Harbor and the big Kahului shopping centers all within a few minutes of our door, so Central Maui jobs get our quickest response.

Short drives change how a job runs. We can drop off samples one afternoon, measure the next morning, and come back for a quick touch-up without blocking out half a day. When a supplier calls to say freight has cleared Kahului Harbor, the material can be on your floor the same week.

Homes and Buildings We Floor in Central Maui

Central Maui has the widest mix of building ages on the island, and the floor plan for each job starts with when and how the house was built. Wailuku has the highest concentration of plantation-style homes on Maui, clustered around the old town core and Sandhills, while Kahului is mostly planned subdivisions poured on concrete.

Kahului’s Dream City was Hawaii’s first planned town, built by Alexander & Baldwin from 1949 to 1963 to move sugar workers out of the plantation camps. More than 3,500 single-story homes went up in concrete and hollow tile, so the floors we replace there sit mostly on slab.

Newer master-planned communities fill the land between the two towns. Kehalani started in the 1990s on the slopes above Waikapu, and Maui Lani grew from its first subdivision in 1996 to its last in 2018.

Common Floor Problems in Central Maui

The problems we fix in Central Maui follow the housing map. Wood homes in Wailuku fail from below, Kahului slabs fail from moisture and movement, and both towns lose floor finish to wind-blown dirt.

Older Wailuku Homes: Raised Floors and Termites

Raised plantation-era floors sit over open crawlspaces, so decades of damp air, plumbing leaks and termites soften the plank or plywood underneath. We open the soft spots, sister or replace damaged framing where needed and lay new plywood before any finish floor goes down.

Many of these homes still have their original wood floors under carpet or linoleum. When the boards are sound, our hardwood floor sanding and refinishing service is often cheaper than replacing them.

Kahului Slab Homes: Moisture and Cracked Tile

Older Kahului slabs were often poured without a vapor retarder, so ground moisture wicks up and pushes on glued floors. Shrinkage cracks in Dream City and 1970s slabs also telegraph straight through rigid tile.

We meter the slab, then bridge cracks with a crack isolation membrane before laying ceramic or porcelain tile. Old 9 x 9 inch vinyl tiles in pre-1980 homes get tested for asbestos before anyone breaks them up.

Trade Winds, Red Dirt and Busy Entries

The isthmus between the West Maui Mountains and Haleakala acts like a wind tunnel, and trade winds lift red dust off the fallow former sugar fields around Puunene. That grit grinds down finishes at every door that opens to the yard.

We steer Central Maui clients toward 20 mil wear layers, textured porcelain or a matte hardwood finish at entries. A recessed or full-width walk-off mat inside the door does as much as the floor choice itself.

For pre-1980 flooring, the Hawaii Department of Health’s Indoor and Radiological Health Branch sets the asbestos rules we follow before removal.

Most-Requested Services in Kahului and Wailuku

Most Central Maui calls fall into five services. Here is what each usually looks like in a Kahului or Wailuku home or business.

  • Vinyl plank on Kahului slabs. Our luxury vinyl plank installation is the most common upgrade in Dream City, Kehalani and Maui Lani, replacing worn carpet and builder tile with a waterproof floor that handles kids, pets and red dirt.
  • Tile for kitchens, baths and entries. Porcelain and ceramic tile suit slab homes, with a crack isolation membrane wherever the slab has moved.
  • Refinishing original Wailuku wood. Sanding and recoating the plank floors found in older Wailuku and Wailuku Heights homes.
  • Repairs before replacement. Our floor and subfloor repair service handles soft spots in raised homes, lifted planks, cracked tile and water damage, often without redoing the whole room.
  • Business floors. Retail, office and warehouse flooring for Kahului and Wailuku businesses, covered below.

Commercial Flooring for Central Maui Businesses

Kahului is the island’s commercial center, and most of our commercial work is within a few miles of the office. That includes stores around Queen Kaahumanu Center, Maui Mall and Dairy Road, warehouses near the harbor and on Wakea Avenue, and professional offices along Main Street and High Street in Wailuku.

We plan commercial floors around your opening hours, phasing a store or office so part of it stays open. Common choices are carpet tile for offices, VCT or sheet vinyl for back rooms, glue-down luxury vinyl for retail and epoxy or polished concrete for warehouses and service bays.

Wailuku is the county seat, so government offices and contractors working on public buildings are close neighbors. Public projects come with prevailing wage rules under HRS Chapter 104 and formal submittals, which we account for when we price the job.
