Vinyl Plank and Laminate Floor Repair on Maui

Maui Prestige Flooring repairs luxury vinyl plank, vinyl tile and laminate floors in Maui homes, condos and vacation rentals, whether we installed them or not. With 16+ years in flooring and 1,700+ jobs behind us, we have replaced a lot of single planks without disturbing the rest of the room.

Floating floors are built to be repairable, but only if the person fixing them knows how the locking system works and why the floor moved. We swap damaged planks, close separating seams, flatten peaks and buckles, and correct the cause so the problem does not come back.

Most plank repairs are done in a single visit. Photos are often enough for a first price, followed by a written quote and our 1-year labor warranty on the work.

LVP and Laminate Repair Services on Maui

LVP repair and laminate floor repair mean fixing damaged or shifting planks in a floating or glue-down floor without tearing out the room. Because most of these floors click together, a skilled installer can take them apart, fix a section and put them back.

We repair floors for homeowners, condo owners, landlords and property managers, including short-term rentals in Kihei, Wailea and Kaanapali where a chipped plank needs fixing between guests. Brands we work on regularly include Shaw, Mohawk, COREtec, Karndean, Metroflor and Provenza, plus most store-brand click floors.

Diagnosis

We check the slab with a straightedge, look for pinned edges and missing gaps, and take moisture readings.

Plank replacement

Chipped, scratched, burned or water-damaged planks swapped from the wall or cut out mid-floor.

Gap and peak fixes

Separating seams closed, peaks flattened and expansion space restored where the floor was too tight.

Transition repair

Loose or cracked T-moldings, reducers and stair noses replaced or reset to give the floor room to move.

For vacation rental flooring, we can usually book a plank swap on a turnover day so the unit never leaves the calendar. A click-lock repair is walkable as soon as we finish, and a glued-in plank needs a few hours before furniture goes back on it.

Floating Floor Problems We Fix

Most floating floor complaints come down to five problems, and each points to a different cause. This table shows what we look for and how we fix it.

Problem What it looks like Usual cause How we fix it
Separating seams Gaps opening at plank ends Slab dips, heat swings, broken locks Correct the cause, close or replace planks
Peaking at doorways Two rows lifting into a ridge Floor pinned by door jambs or tight trim Undercut jambs, trim back edges, add a transition
Buckling Planks lifting across a wide area No expansion gap, heat, moisture Free the perimeter, relay the area
Chipped or scratched planks Damage on one or two planks Dropped pans, furniture, grit Single plank replacement
Swollen laminate edges Puffy, raised seams Water soaking into the fiberboard core Replace affected planks after the leak is fixed

A clicking or hollow sound underfoot is usually a dip in the slab under the planks. That needs filling with patch or self-leveler before the planks go back down, which our subfloor repair and floor leveling team handles.

Swapping Out a Plank in the Middle of the Room

A damaged plank can be replaced in one of two ways: unclicking the floor back from the nearest wall, or cutting the plank out and gluing a new one in. We choose based on how far the plank is from a wall and how the floor is locked.

Unclick from the wall. We remove the baseboard or quarter round, number each row as it comes up, replace the damaged plank and relay everything in order. This keeps every locking joint intact and is the best method within about 4 to 6 rows of a wall.

Cut out and glue in. For a plank in the middle of a large room, we cut the damaged plank out with a plunge saw, trim the bottom locking lip off a new plank, and glue it into the opening with a flooring adhesive. Weights hold it flat while it sets.

Glue-down vinyl is warmed with a heat gun to soften the adhesive, lifted, scraped clean and reset with fresh adhesive.

A single plank swap usually takes 1 to 3 hours. Replacing a longer run, such as 10 to 20 planks scratched by a dragged sofa, is typically a half-day job.

Matching the color is often harder than the swap itself. Vinyl and laminate colors are reissued or discontinued every few years, and even the same color can shift between production runs.

  • Spare planks from your original boxes are the best source, so keep at least one box.
  • Borrowed planks from inside a closet or under the refrigerator can go in the visible spot, with a close new match hidden where the borrowed ones came from.
  • Near matches from distributors are checked against your floor in daylight before we commit.
  • A transition at a doorway can separate a new section from the old one if no match exists.

Why Floating Floors Buckle on Maui

Floating floors buckle when they cannot expand. On Maui, heat, humidity and tight installs combine to push planks against walls, cabinets and each other until they lift.

Missing expansion gaps

Most floating floors need about 1/4 to 3/8 inch of space at every wall, pipe and door frame. Floors installed tight to tile, stone or baseboards have nowhere to go.

Pinned by cabinets and islands

A kitchen island, built-in cabinet or heavy aquarium set on top of a floating floor stops it from moving, so the rest of the room peaks or gaps around it.

Sun-heated planks by sliders

West-facing glass in leeward homes in Kihei and Wailea heats planks well above room temperature every afternoon. They expand in the sun and shrink at night, which stresses seams and edges.

Slab moisture

Moisture wicking up through an older slab swells laminate and can push vinyl up from below. A moisture vapor barrier under a relaid section stops it returning.

To fix buckling, we remove baseboards, cut back edges where the floor is tight, undercut door jambs, and free any planks trapped under cabinets. Large rooms may need a T-molding break added through our baseboards, trim and transitions service.

Snap a photo of the worst spot and the nearest wall, and we will tell you what is likely pinning the floor.

Can It Be Saved After Water?

Vinyl plank can usually be saved after water, while laminate usually cannot. The difference is the core: vinyl is waterproof, but the high-density fiberboard in most laminate swells when it gets wet.

With vinyl, water still gets underneath and sits on the slab. We pull up the affected rows, dry the slab and the planks, check for mold, then relay the same planks if the locks are undamaged.

With laminate, swollen planks have to be replaced. Some water-resistant laminate lines, such as Mohawk RevWood Plus, tolerate spills much better, but even they will not survive standing water for long.

Act within 24 to 48 hours of a leak, because the longer water sits under a floating floor, the more planks are affected. For anything bigger than an appliance drip, our water and flood damaged floor repair service covers drying, mold and insurance paperwork.

FAQ

Plank Repair FAQ

Can you replace just one damaged vinyl plank?

Yes. If the plank is within a few rows of a wall, we unclick the floor back to it and relay the same planks. If it sits in the middle of a large room, we cut it out, trim the locking edges off a new plank and glue it into place.

Either way, a single plank swap is usually done in a couple of hours. A spare plank from your original boxes gives the best color match.

Why are my vinyl planks separating?

Gaps at the short ends usually mean the floor is moving more than the locks can hold. Common causes are a dip in the slab that flexes the joints, big temperature swings near sunny glass doors, or a heavy island or cabinet pinning one part of the floor while the rest moves.

Small gaps can sometimes be tapped closed, but they come back unless the cause is fixed. Broken locking tongues mean those planks need replacing.

Can swollen laminate edges be repaired?

Honestly, no. Once the fiberboard core of laminate has absorbed water and swelled, it does not shrink back flat, and sanding or pressing it only makes it worse.

The fix is to replace the swollen planks after finding and stopping the water source. If the damage is spread across the room, replacing it with waterproof vinyl plank is often the smarter long-term move.
