Carpet Re-Stretching and Repair on Maui

Maui Prestige Flooring re-stretches rippled carpet and repairs seams, burns, pet damage and frayed edges for homeowners, landlords and rental managers across Maui. Most visits fix a room in about an hour without replacing a single yard of carpet.

Carpet has been part of our work for 16+ years and more than 1,700 jobs, so we see the same failures again and again. Ripples from a knee-kicker install, seams opened by a rolling chair and doorway edges chewed by the dog all have reliable fixes.

We use a power stretcher, fresh tack strip where the old strip has rusted and hot-melt seam tape for seam repairs. If the carpet is past saving, we will tell you and quote a replacement instead.

Carpet Re-Stretching and Repair Services

Carpet re-stretching pulls loose, wavy carpet tight again and re-hooks it on the tack strip, so the ripples disappear without new material. We pair it with spot repairs so a tired room looks right again in one visit.

What we handle:

  • Power stretching bedrooms, living rooms, halls and landings
  • Replacing rusted or broken tack strip along walls and doorways
  • Re-taping and sealing open or frayed seams
  • Patching burns, stains and pet damage with matched pieces
  • Re-securing frayed edges and replacing worn transition strips

Homeowners call when ripples become a trip hazard, landlords before a move-in inspection, and property managers between rental guests. If you need new carpet rather than a repair, our carpet installation service covers pad, carpet and full installs.

A typical visit runs in this order: we walk the rooms with you, check the pad and tack strip at a corner, then stretch and repair. Beds, dressers and sofas have to come off the area being stretched, and our furniture moving service for flooring jobs can handle that so you do not have to empty the room yourself.

Why Carpet Ripples and Buckles

Carpet ripples when it was never stretched tight enough, or when it loosens faster than the tack strip can hold it. On Maui, four causes show up most.

Knee-kicker installs

A knee kicker only pushes carpet a short distance. Rooms installed with it alone look fine on day one, then relax into waves within a year or two.

Humidity

Carpet backing takes on moisture in Maui’s 70 to 80 percent coastal humidity and relaxes. Rooms closed up for weeks, such as rentals between guests, often wrinkle first.

Worn or wrong pad

Pad that is too thick or soft lets the carpet flex with every step, which works it off the tack strip. Old pad that has crumbled does the same.

Dragged furniture and salt air

Dragging a sofa or bed pulls carpet loose from the strip. Near the coast in places like Kihei and Wailea, salt air rusts tack strip pins until they stop gripping.

A quick way to tell which cause you have is where the ripple sits. Waves running across the middle of a room point to a weak original stretch, while a bubble along one wall or doorway usually means the edge has come off rusted or broken tack strip.

Ripples that grow and shrink with the weather are a humidity sign. They often show up in the wet months on the North Shore and in Upcountry homes that stay closed while the owners are off-island.

Power Stretching vs Knee Kicker

A power stretcher braces against the opposite wall and pulls the carpet tight across the whole room, which is why the result holds for years. A knee kicker is a short-reach tool for closets, stairs and edges, not for stretching a room.

The Carpet and Rug Institute’s installation standard, CRI 105, calls for power stretching on wall-to-wall carpet. Many carpet warranties exclude ripples that come from skipping it.

On a re-stretch we release the carpet along one or two walls, stretch it in both directions, trim the excess and tuck it back onto the strip. Rusted strip is replaced first, because new tension on old pins just pulls loose again.

Tripping over carpet waves?

Most rooms are stretched flat in about an hour, with no new carpet needed.

Carpet Repairs We Handle

Most carpet damage can be repaired in place if there is a matching remnant or a hidden donor area. We match pile direction and color so the repair blends in from standing height.

Seam Repair

Seams open when the original tape fails or a desk chair rolls across them. We lift the seam, lay new hot-melt seam tape with a seam iron, seal the cut edges and roll the join closed.

Patches for Burns, Stains and Pet Damage

We cut out the damage with a circular cutter or straightedge, then set a matching plug from a remnant or a closet donor piece. The plug is secured with seam tape and the pile brushed together so the edges disappear.

Frayed Edges and Transitions

Edges fray where carpet meets tile or vinyl and the old metal strip lets go. We trim back to clean yarn and fit a new Z-bar or pinch strip matched to the height of the next floor.

Doorway profiles for other floor types are covered by our baseboards, trim and transitions service.

Keep any remnants left over from the original install, rolled with the pile facing in and stored somewhere dry. A piece cut from the same dye lot is the best possible match, because new carpet in the same color name can look different after years of Maui sun.

Pets cause a predictable kind of damage. Cats claw the carpet at bedroom doorways, and dogs chew loose edges, so we often patch the doorway and fit a transition strip that leaves no loose yarn to pull.

When Re-Stretching Isn't Worth It

Re-stretching only helps when the carpet itself is still sound. We will tell you when the money is better spent on new carpet.

  • The secondary backing has delaminated, so the carpet stretches but will not hold its shape
  • The pad has crumbled or is soaked with pet urine, which needs new pad at a minimum
  • The carpet is 12 to 15 years old, with matted traffic lanes that stretching cannot fix
  • Water from a leak or flood reached the pad, which is a job for our water and flood damaged floor repair team
  • Several rooms need patches from a carpet that is no longer made

Pad is the deciding factor more often than the carpet. When the carpet is still good but the pad has failed, we can lift the carpet, lay new pad and re-stretch it in the same visit, using a firm rebond pad of about 7/16 inch rather than a thick, soft one.

FAQ

Carpet Repair FAQ

How long does carpet re-stretching take?

Most bedrooms take 30 to 60 minutes, and a living room with a hallway around 1 to 2 hours. A whole house usually fits in half a day. Add time if furniture needs moving or tack strip needs replacing.

Will re-stretched carpet ripple again?

Not if the cause is fixed. Carpet that was only knee-kicked usually stays flat for years after a proper power stretch.

If the pad is failing, the backing has delaminated or heavy furniture keeps getting dragged, ripples can come back. We point that out before we start so you can decide.

Can a seam that's coming apart be fixed?

Usually, yes. We re-tape the seam with new hot-melt tape, seal the cut edges and roll the yarn together so the line nearly disappears. If the edges have frayed badly, we trim them straight first, which can call for a narrow strip of matching carpet.
