Carpet Binding and Custom Area Rugs on Maui
Maui Prestige Flooring cuts and binds carpet into custom area rugs and runners for homes, condos and vacation rentals across Maui. After 16+ years and more than 1,700 flooring jobs, we have seen a lot of good carpet thrown away as offcuts that could have become a rug.
Binding turns a raw carpet edge into a finished, durable border. It lets you have a rug in the exact size your room, hallway or lanai needs, instead of settling for whatever the store stocks in 5 x 8 or 8 x 10.
We measure the space, cut the carpet square and true, and finish it in the edge style you choose. A matching rug pad and delivery can be part of the same written quote.

Carpet Binding Services: Remnants Into Custom Rugs
Carpet binding is the process of sewing a fabric tape or wrapping yarn around the cut edge of carpet so it cannot fray or unravel. Once the edge is bound, a piece of wall-to-wall carpet becomes a finished area rug or runner that can sit on any floor.
It is a good fit for homeowners with leftovers from a carpet job, anyone who needs a rug in an unusual size, and owners of tile, vinyl or wood floors who want a soft spot under a bed or sofa. Rental owners use bound rugs for living rooms and bunk rooms because they cost less to replace than designer rugs.
Our carpet binding service includes:
- Measuring the room or the remnant you already own
- Cutting the carpet straight and square, or to a template
- Binding, serging or adding a wide border in your chosen color
- An optional rug pad cut to size for your floor type
- Delivery and placement in the room

If you are planning new carpet, ask for the remnants when we quote your carpet installation. The offcut from a 12 foot roll is often big enough for a 4 x 6 bedroom rug or a hallway runner.
Value is the other draw. A rug made from a remnant usually costs well under a ready-made rug of the same size and fiber, and it matches the carpet in the next room exactly.
Binding Styles
The edge you choose sets the look of the rug and how well it holds up. Standard binding suits most rugs, serging gives a handmade look, and wide borders frame the rug like a store-bought piece.
| Style | How it looks | Best for | Relative cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard binding | Narrow tape sewn over the edge, color matched | Most cut pile and loop carpet | Lowest |
| Serging | Yarn wrapped tightly around the edge | Plush carpet, rounds and curves | Moderate |
| Wide binding (cotton, linen or canvas) | 2 to 3 inch border with mitered corners | Living rooms and bedrooms | Moderate to high |
| Leather or faux leather | Tailored, premium border | Offices, dens, statement rugs | Highest |
| Fringe | Fringe sewn onto two ends | Traditional or boho styles | Moderate |
Tape and yarn colors are matched against the carpet in daylight, not under a lamp. A contrasting border, such as navy on a sand-colored loop or charcoal on cream plush, can make a remnant look like a designed rug.
Serging takes longer than standard binding because the yarn is wrapped stitch by stitch, but it is the only edge that disappears into a deep cut pile. Fringe is usually added to the two short ends only, with the long sides bound to match.
We do not use iron-on instant binding for finished rugs. The hot-melt glue softens in a sunny Maui room and the tape starts to peel within a season or two.
Custom Sizes and Shapes
A bound rug can be almost any size up to the width of the carpet roll, usually 12 feet, without a seam. Larger rugs are joined with a hot-melt seam before binding, placed where furniture will cover it.
For a living room, size the rug so at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs sit on it. Leave 12 to 18 inches of bare floor around the edges so the room does not look wall-to-wall.
Under a bed, the rug should reach 18 to 24 inches past each side so your feet land on it first thing in the morning. Under a dining table, add about 24 inches past the table edge so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out.

Rectangles
Any size, from a 2 x 3 entry mat to a 12 x 15 living room rug, cut square to the room.
Runners
Hallway and kitchen runners in 2 to 3 foot widths, plus stair runners cut to the tread depth.
Rounds and ovals
Cut from a center point for dining tables, entries and reading nooks.
Odd shapes
Notched around columns, kitchen islands or bay windows from a paper template we trace on site.

Rugs for Lanais, Rentals and Sandy Entries
For a covered lanai or a sandy entry, choose solution-dyed polypropylene (olefin) or polyester carpet with a synthetic binding. These fibers do not soak up water, resist mildew and hold their color in strong sun far better than wool or cotton.
Covered lanais
Outdoor-rated carpet bound with polypropylene or acrylic tape dries quickly after a trade wind shower. Cotton borders can mildew, so we skip them outdoors.
Vacation rentals
Smaller bound rugs that can be hosed off or replaced between seasons keep a vacation rental floor looking fresh without a big spend.
Sandy entries
A low-loop bound mat inside the door traps sand before it reaches the floor, which matters most in beach homes in Kihei and Wailea.
Even outdoor fibers break down in full, unshaded sun over a few years, so we recommend bound rugs for covered lanais rather than open decks. Pick up and shake lanai rugs after a heavy rain, and the floor underneath will dry instead of staying damp.
How Binding Works, Start to Finish
Measure
15 to 30 minutes
We measure the space and the carpet, mark doors that need to swing over the rug and note where furniture will sit.
Choose carpet and edge
Same visit
Pick a remnant or new carpet, then the binding style and a tape or yarn color matched against the pile.
Cut
Under an hour
The carpet is cut from the back with a straightedge and carpet knife, or a row cutter for loop styles, so the edge follows the rows.
Bind
A few hours
A binding machine sews the tape or wraps the yarn around the edge, with corners mitered or rounded to suit the style.
Pad
Included
A felt, rubber or combination pad is trimmed about an inch smaller than the rug on every side so it never shows.
Delivery
Scheduled with you
We bring the finished rug to your home, roll it out on its pad and check that doors clear it.
Loop and Berber remnants need extra care at the cut, because a snagged loop can run down a whole row. If you want a softer, wall-to-wall feel in an office or playroom instead, our carpet tile installation service is worth comparing.
FAQ
Carpet Binding FAQ
Can you bind carpet I bought somewhere else?
In many cases, yes. Send us photos of the carpet, the label or style name if you have it, and the size you want, and we will tell you whether it will bind cleanly before we quote.
Very deep shag, some sisal and seagrass weaves, and carpet with a cracked or brittle backing can be hard to bind well. We would rather say so up front than hand you a rug with a wavy edge.
How long does carpet binding take?
The binding itself takes a few hours for a typical room-size rug, a little longer for wide borders and rounds. Total turnaround depends on whether you already have the carpet or we are ordering new material, and we give you a delivery date with the quote.
Can you make a round rug?
Yes. We mark the circle from a center point with a trammel bar, cut it with a carpet knife, and finish the curve with serging or a flexible binding tape that follows the edge without puckering. Ovals and soft-cornered rectangles are made the same way.
