Stair, Tread and Railing Installation on Maui

Maui Prestige Flooring installs stair treads, risers, nosings, railings and balusters in Maui homes, rentals and rebuilds. In more than 16 years and 1,700+ flooring jobs, stairs have proven to be the part of a remodel where precision shows most.

Most of our stair work starts with a new floor downstairs or a worn carpet runner that has to go. Every step is a slightly different size, so each tread is measured and cut to fit its own opening.

We handle the tear-out, carpentry, finish and trim so your staircase matches the floors it connects. You get a written quote, a clear schedule and a 1-year labor warranty.

Stair, Tread and Railing Installation Services

A staircase has more parts than most people notice. The tread is the step you stand on, the riser is the vertical face, the nosing is the rounded front edge, and stringers are the hidden boards that carry it all.

We install and replace every visible part of that system:

  • Treads, risers and nosings in wood, vinyl plank, tile or carpet
  • Skirt boards along the wall and landing trim
  • Handrails, balusters (spindles) and newel posts
  • Tread replacement on existing stringers, with squeaks and loose steps fixed
  • Shoe molding, transitions and finish touch-ups

It suits homeowners matching stairs to a new floor, landlords replacing worn carpet in a long-term rental, and owners finishing a rebuild in Lahaina and West Maui, where many homes now need new stairs and railings from the framing up.

Stair Tread Options

Solid hardwood is the most durable and refinishable tread, vinyl plank is the most water-resistant and budget-friendly, and carpet gives the best grip. Here is how the common options compare.

Option Durability Slip resistance Look Typical cost
Solid hardwood treads Very high; can be sanded and refinished Fair; a runner helps Classic, warm Upper end of the range
Retrofit treads High; caps over existing treads Fair Same as solid wood Mid to upper range
Vinyl plank with matching nosing High; waterproof Good with a textured plank Matches an LVP floor Lower end of the range
Porcelain tile with metal nosing Very high Needs a textured, slip-rated tile Modern, cool underfoot Upper end and above
Carpet or carpet runner Moderate; wears on the nose Best Soft, quiet Lowest

Most Maui stair projects land between $150 and $350 per step for treads and risers, depending on material. Railings are priced separately, and your written quote gives the exact number.

Carpet still makes sense for bedroom stairs and homes with toddlers or older dogs. It can wrap each step in a waterfall style or be tailored tight around the nose, and our carpet installation team handles both.

Matching Your Stairs to Your New Floor

The best-looking stairs read as part of the floor they meet. That comes down to the nosing profile, the color and how the treads are finished.

Flush vs overlap nosing

A flush nose sits level with the tread surface for a seamless look, while an overlap nose caps the edge of the plank and hides the cut. We pick the profile that fits the tread depth and the product line.

Color matching

Wood treads are ordered in the same species as your hardwood flooring installation and stained to match. For vinyl, we order stair noses from the same collection as your luxury vinyl plank.

Prefinished vs site-finished

Prefinished treads arrive sealed, so the stairs are back in use sooner. Site-finished treads are stained in place for an exact match, using the same process as our hardwood floor sanding and refinishing service.

We measure every step and show you wood, retrofit and vinyl plank options side by side.

Converting Carpeted Stairs to Wood or Vinyl

Under most stair carpet are rough pine or plywood treads that were never meant to be seen, plus staples, tack strip and glue. Occasionally we find oak worth refinishing, but most conversions need new treads or caps. Turning them into hardwood stairs takes one of two approaches.

Retrofit treads. We cut the old nose flush with the riser and glue a 5/8 or 3/4 inch hardwood cap over the existing tread. It is quicker and leaves the structure untouched.

Full tread replacement. On worn or squeaky stairs, we remove the old treads and set new 1 inch solid treads on the existing stringers with construction adhesive and screws. Loose or cracked stringers get repaired at the same time.

Vinyl plank stairs. Each tread is wrapped with glued plank and a matching stair nose, and the risers get plank or painted MDF. It is the most popular choice in rentals because it matches a new LVP floor and wipes clean after a beach day.

Whichever route you choose, every tread is glued and screwed rather than nailed alone. Maui’s humidity swings work bare nails loose over time, and a bead of adhesive where tread meets riser keeps the steps quiet for years.

Railings, Balusters and Newel Posts

A new railing ties the whole staircase together, and it must meet code for height and spacing. We install wood, metal and mixed systems and check the details before anything is fastened.

  • Wood: oak or paint-grade handrails and newel posts, with wood or square balusters
  • Metal: powder-coated iron-look balusters, or aluminum and marine-grade stainless near the coast, where salt air rusts plain steel
  • Mixed: a wood handrail and newel with slim black metal balusters, the most requested look

Maui County currently enforces a residential code based on the 2018 International Residential Code. Under it, handrails sit 34 to 38 inches above the stair nosings, guards are at least 36 inches high where the drop is more than 30 inches, and balusters must stop a 4 inch sphere (4 3/8 inch on the open side of a stair). Risers top out at 7 3/4 inches and treads must be at least 10 inches deep.

Codes and local amendments change, so we confirm current requirements before we build. Wood newels and stringers are also checked for termite damage, a risk we cover on our hardwood flooring page.

Our Stair Installation Process

  1. Measure and template

    One visit

No two steps are the same width or depth, so we template each opening and note riser heights, skew and wall angles.

  2. Order and prep

    Days to weeks

Treads, nosings and railing parts are ordered or cut to size. Special-order wood and vinyl collections can take several weeks to reach Maui.

  3. Tear-out

    Half a day

Carpet, tack strip, staples or old treads come off, and the debris is hauled away the same day.

  4. Treads and risers

    1 to 2 days

Risers go in first, then treads are glued and fastened. We work so the stairs can be used each evening.

  5. Railings

    1 to 2 days

Newels are anchored, the rail is set to height, and balusters are spaced and fastened.

  6. Finish and walkthrough

    Final day

Site-finished treads get stain and coats, then shoe molding and skirt trim go on. Our baseboards, trim and transitions crew matches the landing to the stairs.

Commercial stairwells in schools and offices usually suit rubber treads with contrasting nosings instead. Our rubber flooring installation page covers those.

FAQ

Stair Installation FAQ

Can you put vinyl plank on stairs?

Yes. Each tread gets a piece of plank glued down, finished with a stair nose made for that product line, and the riser gets its own strip of plank. Rigid core planks are glued rather than floated on stairs, and we choose a flush or overlap nose depending on the tread depth and the brand.

A matching nose looks best. When a color has no matching profile, a universal stair nose in a coordinating tone still finishes the edge cleanly.

How long does stair tread replacement take?

A straight run of 12 to 14 steps with prefinished treads typically takes 2 to 3 days, including tear-out and risers. Site-finished treads add 2 to 3 days for stain and coats. New railings usually add 1 to 2 days, and we keep the stairs usable each evening.

Do I need a permit to replace a stair railing?

Swapping a few balusters or a worn handrail of the same design usually does not need one. A new guard, a changed stair layout, structural repairs or work on an exterior stair can.

We confirm with the Maui County Building Permit Section before work starts, and plan the timeline around any permit that is required.
