Carpet Installation on Maui

Maui Prestige Flooring installs wall-to-wall carpet in bedrooms, family rooms, condos and vacation rentals across Maui. Over 16 years and more than 1,700 flooring jobs, we have torn out plenty of carpet that failed early because of a cheap pad or a rushed, knee-kicked install.

Carpet laid over an island slab plays by its own rules. Moisture rising through the concrete, salt air that rusts tack strip pins and beach sand ground into the pile all shorten its life when the installer ignores them.

We match the pad to your slab, power-stretch every room and plan seams where feet rarely land. Every job comes with a written quote, a set install date and a 1-year labor warranty on our workmanship.

Carpet Installation for Maui Homes, Condos and Rentals

Our carpet installation takes a room from the old floor to finished carpet, with every step in between priced on one quote. Most bedrooms and family rooms are done in a single day.

Carpet suits bedrooms, upstairs rooms, media rooms and family spaces where you want warmth and a quieter house. It also fits condo units whose house rules favor soft flooring, and long-term rentals where a low cost per room matters more than a 20 year lifespan.

Every carpet installation includes:

  • Furniture moving, plus old carpet removal and pad haul-away
  • New tack strip fastened to the slab or plywood subfloor
  • A slab-rated pad chosen for your moisture readings
  • Hot-melt seams sealed along the cut edges
  • Power stretching to the CRI 105 residential standard
  • Metal or wood transitions at tile, vinyl and wood edges, then a full vacuum

In condos, a quality carpet and pad is often the easiest floor to get past a building’s sound rules, and our condo flooring service handles the association paperwork when other floors are part of the job. If the room has old tile or sheet vinyl instead of carpet, our floor removal and disposal service handles the tear-out and any asbestos testing first.

Carpet Fibers and Styles

Nylon is the most durable carpet fiber for a busy Maui home, polyester is the soft value pick, triexta sits between them, and wool is the premium natural choice. The fiber decides how the carpet springs back after years of foot traffic.

Fiber Durability Softness Stain resistance Relative price
Nylon Highest; springs back in hallways and on stairs Good Good when treated Mid to high
Polyester (PET) Moderate; can mat in traffic lanes Very soft Very good, resists water-based spills Lowest
Triexta (such as SmartStrand) High Soft Built in, does not wear off Mid
Wool High, natural crimp Rich and warm Fair; needs prompt cleaning Highest

Style is about how the yarn is finished. Cut pile (plush or Saxony) feels the softest, frieze uses tightly twisted strands that hide footprints and sand, loop or Berber resists crushing but can snag on pet claws, and cut-and-loop patterns add texture that hides wear.

Rooms with big lanai sliders need one more check. Solution-dyed nylon and polyester carry the color through the whole fiber, so they hold up far better against Maui’s UV than carpet dyed only on the surface.

Face weight is the ounces of yarn per square yard. Most homes do well between 35 and 55 oz, but density and twist matter more than a big face weight number, so we compare samples by feel and by spec.

Choosing a Carpet Pad for a Concrete Slab

On a Maui slab, choose a pad with a moisture barrier film and enough density to hold a stretch. The pad does more for comfort and lifespan than an upgrade in carpet grade.

Pad type Typical spec Best for
Rebond with barrier film 7/16 inch, 6 to 8 lb density Most cut pile carpet on slabs
Synthetic fiber (felt) 3/8 inch, very firm Berber, loop and commercial-style carpet
Rubber slab pad 1/4 to 3/8 inch Long life, heavy traffic, damp slabs
Memory or frothed foam 7/16 inch Bedrooms where softness comes first

Thicker is not better. Most carpet warranties cap a residential pad at 7/16 inch, and anything softer lets the backing flex until seams open and ripples appear.

A pad film stops everyday dampness, but a slab with high readings needs a sealed surface first. Our moisture vapor barrier installation covers testing and sealing for older slabs poured without a vapor retarder.

Carpet in a Humid Climate: Mold, Odor and Sand

Carpet handles Maui humidity well when the slab stays dry, the pad resists mildew and air keeps moving through the house. Musty odor and mold start when moisture gets trapped between the slab and the carpet backing.

Moisture from below

A film-faced or antimicrobial pad blocks damp that rises through concrete. Homes in wetter windward areas like Paia and Haiku benefit most from a barrier pad.

Air and AC

Closed-up rental units and second homes trap humid air. Running a dehumidifier or AC on a timer, or simply leaving ceiling fans on, keeps the pile from smelling stale.

Sand and red dirt

Beach sand and red dirt cut fibers like sandpaper. Walk-off mats at the lanai door and weekly vacuuming add years, especially near the beaches in Kihei and Lahaina.

Most carpet warranties require hot water extraction every 12 to 18 months. On Maui, we suggest booking it during a dry, breezy stretch so the carpet dries in hours, not days. Carpet soaked by a leak or flood is a different problem, covered by our water and flood damaged floor repair team.

How We Install Carpet

  1. Removal and haul-away

    1 to 3 hours

Old carpet and pad are cut into strips, rolled and hauled off. Staples and old pad scraps are pulled so nothing bumps through the new floor.

  2. Slab check and prep

    Same visit

We take moisture readings, scrape high spots and patch cracks or dips that would show through the pad.

  3. Tack strip and pad

    1 to 2 hours

New strip goes in a gully width from the wall, and the pad is laid with seams taped and offset from the carpet seams.

  4. Seaming

    Varies by room

Seams run with the light from your windows and away from doorways, joined with hot-melt tape and a seaming iron, edges sealed.

  5. Power stretching

    30 to 60 minutes a room

A power stretcher pulls the carpet tight from wall to wall. A knee kicker is only used to hook the edges, never as the main stretch.

  6. Trim and walkthrough

    Final hour

Edges are tucked, transitions fastened, doors checked for clearance, and every room vacuumed before we walk it with you.

Seam planning happens at the measure. Carpet comes in 12 foot wide rolls, so a 14 foot bedroom needs a seam somewhere, and we place it in a closet doorway or along the bed wall where nobody walks or looks.

Most homes up to about 1,000 sq ft are carpeted in one day, and stairs add roughly half a day. If you are carpeting a staircase, our stair and tread installation service explains waterfall and cap-and-band options.

Carpet Brands and Samples

We work with carpet lines such as Shaw, Mohawk, Godfrey Hirst, Fabrica and Masland, and pads from the major cushion makers. We bring samples to your home so you can judge color under your own light, not under store fluorescents.

Look at the warranty sheet before you choose. Residential warranties usually require an approved pad and professional installation, and a vacation rental is often treated as commercial use.

For offices, playrooms and rentals where single pieces may need swapping, our carpet tile installation service is often the smarter buy. Leftover broadloom does not have to go to waste either, since carpet binding and custom area rugs turn remnants into finished rugs.

FAQ

Carpet Installation FAQ

What carpet pad do you recommend for a slab?

For most cut pile carpet on a Maui slab, we recommend a 7/16 inch, 8 lb density rebond or a dense synthetic fiber pad with a moisture barrier film on top. Both resist the damp that rises through concrete and give the carpet a firm base for stretching.

For Berber and other loop carpet, we drop to a 3/8 inch pad that is firmer still, because a soft pad lets loops flex until the backing breaks down.

How long does carpet installation take?

Most homes up to about 1,000 sq ft are done in one working day once the carpet is on site. A staircase adds roughly half a day, and removing glued-down carpet or old tile adds another day for scraping and prep. You can walk on new carpet as soon as we finish vacuuming.

How much does carpet installation cost?

Most carpet installations on Maui land between $5 and $10 per sq ft with pad, material and labor included, which works out to about $45 to $90 per square yard. Fiber, face weight, pad grade, stairs, removal of the old floor and furniture moving all move the number.

Room shape matters too, because carpet comes in 12 foot wide rolls and odd layouts create more waste. Your written quote is the exact price.

Why is my carpet rippling?

Ripples almost always mean the carpet was knee-kicked into place instead of power-stretched, or it sits on a pad that is too thick and soft. Humidity then relaxes the backing and the slack shows up as waves.

Our carpet re-stretching service pulls the carpet tight with a power stretcher and resets it on the tack strip, which fixes most ripples in a few hours.
