Custom Pattern Flooring on Maui: Borders, Inlays and Medallions
Maui Prestige Flooring designs and installs custom wood floor patterns, from a simple contrasting border to a full compass medallion, for homes, resorts and restaurants across Maui. With 16+ years in the trade and more than 1,700 jobs completed, we treat pattern work as a design job first and an installation second.
Borders, inlays and mixed-species floors only look effortless when every line is planned around the room's sightlines and doorways. We draw it to scale, build a sample board and get your sign-off before a single strip is cut.
You get a layout drawing, a written quote and a 1-year labor warranty on the installation.

Custom Pattern Flooring Installation, Designed Around Your Space
Custom pattern flooring is any wood floor that goes beyond a single field of boards: borders that frame a room, feature strips that guide you down a hall, medallions at the center of an entry, or two or more species woven into one design. It is built for the rooms people remember, such as luxury home entries, resort lobbies, restaurant dining rooms and great rooms facing the ocean.
Because the design is unique, so is the process. Every custom pattern floor we take on includes:
- A design consultation and full room measurements
- A scaled layout drawing tied to doorways, walls and focal points
- A sample board built from the actual species being ordered
- Precision cutting and a full dry fit before glue
- Installation, sanding and site finishing as one surface
- Thresholds, base trim and a final walkthrough

Design Options for a One-of-a-Kind Floor
Most custom floors combine two or three of these elements. A plain oak field with a walnut border is the simplest, while a medallion, feature strips and a stone inset in one entry is the most involved.
Borders and Feature Strips
A border is a band of contrasting wood, usually 2 to 12 inches wide, that frames the room a few inches in from the walls. Feature strips are thin lines of a second species, often 1/4 to 1/2 inch, set between boards to outline a dining area or guide the eye down a hallway.
Mitered corners have to close tight, so we cut and fit them before the field goes down.
Medallions and Compass Inlays
Pre-made medallions come from specialty inlay makers, laser or waterjet cut and assembled in a frame ready to set into the floor. Custom-cut medallions are drawn for your room and can carry a compass rose, a family motif or a shape drawn from the architecture.
Pre-made is faster and costs less. Custom-cut takes longer but is one of a kind.
Mixed-Species Patterns
Alternating species inside a field, such as white oak and walnut in a checkerboard or chevron, creates contrast without stain. The trick is choosing woods that match in hardness and movement, so one does not dent or gap faster than the other.
We favor pairings that sand at a similar rate, so the floor stays flat after every refinish.
Wood With Tile or Stone Insets
Marble or porcelain insets inside a wood floor, or a wood border around a stone entry, mark a change of room without a threshold. The two materials expand differently, so we leave a hidden flexible joint and set both at the same finished height.
Stone insets also make sense right inside a lanai door, where sand and water land first.
The field inside a border does not have to be straight plank. Our herringbone floor installation and parquet flooring installation pages cover the two patterns most often framed this way.

Picking Species That Age Well in Maui Sun
Every wood species changes color under UV light, at different speeds and in different directions. A contrast that looks crisp on install day can flatten or even reverse within a few years, so we choose species that age in step or plan for the change.
| Species | At install | After a few years of sun | Pattern role |
|---|---|---|---|
| White oak | Pale tan | Mellows to warm honey | Reliable field or light border |
| Maple | Creamy white | Ambers toward yellow | Light accent away from sliders |
| American walnut | Dark chocolate | Lightens to softer brown | Dark border, contrast narrows |
| Jatoba (Brazilian cherry) | Salmon to orange-red | Darkens to deep red-brown | Warm accent that deepens |
| Purpleheart | Bright purple | Turns brown | Only where change is welcome |
| Hawaiian koa | Gold to reddish brown | Deepens and richens | Local accent for medallions |
Sunlight through a lanai slider is the biggest factor. We note which way the room faces and where afternoon light lands, then build your sample board from offcuts of the actual lot being ordered, so you judge real color instead of a catalog chip.
Leave the sample in the room for a few days and look at it morning and evening. A pairing that reads well in both lights usually reads well for years.
UV-filtering window film, sheer curtains and moving rugs now and then slow the change. A finish with UV inhibitors helps too, and the full range of finish choices is on our hardwood floor sanding and refinishing page.

From Sketch to Finished Floor
A custom floor moves through four stages, and you approve the design at the end of the second, before anything is cut. Here is what happens at each one.
Design Consultation and Measurements
1 to 2 hours on site
We walk the space with you, measure every wall and opening, and note sightlines from the front door, stairs and main seating. We also talk budget early, because a border and a full medallion sit at very different price points.
Layout Drawing and Sample Board
1 to 2 weeks
You receive a scaled drawing showing the pattern, border widths and medallion position, plus a sample board in the real species. Nothing is ordered or cut until you approve both.
Precision Cutting and Dry Fit
2 to 5 days
Border miters, feature strips and custom inlays are cut with routers, templates and jigs, some in a shop and some on site. Everything is dry fit on the floor first so joints close tight before glue goes on.
Install, Sand and Finish
3 to 7 days
The pattern is glued or nailed in place, then the whole floor is sanded flat and finished together. Site finishing is what makes separate pieces read as one continuous surface.
Custom species and pre-made medallions usually ship from the mainland, so allow about 4 to 6 weeks for material on top of design time. Our flooring installation overview explains how ordering and scheduling work. Patterns set into solid wood suit raised floors in homes like those in Upcountry Maui, while slab homes take engineered boards glued down.
Pattern Work for Resorts, Restaurants and Lobbies
Commercial pattern floors need the same craftsmanship as residential ones, plus a tougher finish and an installation plan that keeps the business open. We build both into the quote.
Commercial-grade finish
Lobbies and dining rooms take far more foot traffic than a home. We specify a commercial waterborne finish such as Bona Traffic HD and set a recoat schedule before opening day.
Phased installation
Work can run in sections, closed wings or overnight shifts so guests and diners keep moving. Each phase is finished and cured before the next one opens.
Patterns that guide traffic
Borders and feature strips can lead guests from the entry to a host stand or front desk, and a logo or compass inlay can mark the arrival point.
For beachfront properties in Wailea or along the Kaanapali coast in Lahaina and West Maui, pairing wood pattern work with stone at the entries keeps the first wave of sand off the wood. Our hotel and resort flooring page covers scheduling and specs for hospitality projects.
FAQ
Custom Pattern Flooring FAQ
Can you add an inlay to my existing hardwood floor?
Often, yes. We rout the existing boards to the exact shape of the medallion or border, set the inlay at the same thickness, then sand and refinish the room so old and new wood share one finish. It works best on solid hardwood or thick engineered wood, while thin wear layers and floating floors usually rule it out.
Expect a slight color difference at first, which softens as the new wood ages in your light.
How long does a custom floor medallion take?
Plan on about 2 to 4 weeks for design and approval, then 4 to 6 weeks if the medallion or species ships from the mainland. Setting it in usually takes 1 to 2 days, followed by 2 to 3 days of sanding and finish coats.
A stock medallion from a catalog shortens the design stage, while a fully custom motif takes the longest.
Can a custom pattern be done in tile or vinyl instead of wood?
Yes, and for bathrooms, lanais and wet entries it is often the smarter choice. Porcelain and natural stone can be waterjet cut into medallions and borders, and some luxury vinyl tile lines can be cut into feature strips and simple inlays. Our tile installation service covers stone and porcelain pattern work.
